New App AntiScam Pango Harnesses AI to Combat Scams

AntiScam Pango, a new AI-driven app, helps users identify potential scams in real-time across multiple messaging platforms.

Singapore has unveiled AntiScam Pango, a cutting-edge application designed to help users detect potential scams effortlessly. By analyzing incoming messages, this app flags suspicious conversations in real-time, even identifying previously unreported numbers.

AI-Powered Detection

Developed collaboratively by the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) and Google DeepMind, the app was officially presented by Acting Minister for Manpower Jasmin Lau during the STACK Conference 2026 on November 4. This innovative tool leverages artificial intelligence to scrutinize messages across platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS, enhancing user security.

Privacy at the Forefront

One of the standout features of AntiScam Pango is its on-device analysis, which ensures that users' message content remains confidential. "The analysis occurs directly on your phone, ensuring your messages are private," Lau stated. The app runs silently in the background of users' devices, ready to identify and flag messages that may be scams.

When a suspicious conversation is detected, the app provides explanations of the warning signs. This educational aspect empowers users to understand the social engineering tactics utilized by scammers, thereby enhancing their ability to safeguard personal information.

User Empowerment and Control

With AntiScam Pango, users are not automatically forced to block or delete messages. Instead, they have the option to examine the flagged messages, report them, or take additional steps to verify the sender's identity. The app respects privacy protocols by only sending message content to external servers when users choose to report suspicious activity.

Mark Chen, GovTech’s director of trust and safety, emphasized the importance of user privacy. He mentioned, "With AntiScam Pango, we aim to demonstrate that you don’t need to sacrifice your personal message privacy for scam protection." This collaboration with Google DeepMind showcases how small AI models can provide effective security without compromising personal data.

Building on Previous Success

AntiScam Pango builds upon the foundation laid by ScamShield, another initiative by GovTech designed to protect users from scams. ScamShield has achieved notable success, with over 1.61 million installations since its launch in August 2024, blocking calls from blacklisted numbers and assessing reported messages for scam indicators.

Unlike ScamShield, which requires user submissions for checking, AntiScam Pango proactively analyzes messages as they come in. This allows for the identification of risks from new, previously unlisted numbers, further enhancing user protection.

Future Developments

GovTech is actively exploring the integration of AntiScam Pango with ScamShield, though no specific timeline has been provided. Additionally, the agency is researching ways to expand the app's compatibility to include more messaging platforms, broadening its protective reach beyond just WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS.

Currently, AntiScam Pango is available on Android devices, as this platform permits applications to access incoming notifications from messaging services. Plans are being considered to offer similar protections for iOS users while maintaining the same high standards of privacy and security.
