Hong Kong Advances 24/7 Tokenized Deposits and Stablecoin Trials
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority enhances Project Ensemble to support around-the-clock tokenized deposits and stablecoin trials.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has taken significant strides in its efforts to modernize financial transactions by launching 24/7 support for tokenized deposit settlements. This initiative is part of the ongoing Project Ensemble, specifically the EnsembleTX pilot phase, which aims to facilitate smoother and more efficient interbank transactions.
Expansion of Project Ensemble
Initially introduced in November 2025, Project Ensemble leverages the Hong Kong dollar real-time gross settlement system to enable banks to conduct tokenized deposit transactions seamlessly, around the clock. With this latest enhancement, the HKMA has successfully showcased its commitment to increasing the efficiency and accessibility of banking services.
Increased Participation
The initiative has gained momentum, with the number of participating banks growing to twelve and industry stakeholders reaching a total of twenty. Major players in the banking sector, including HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong), Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank (Asia), and ICBC (Asia), are now involved. These institutions have been utilizing tokenized deposits for managing corporate treasury operations and conducting transactions related to tokenized money market funds.
Trialing Stablecoins
In addition to facilitating tokenized deposits, the HKMA is advancing its trial initiatives to include trades of tokenized Exchange Fund Bills. This expansion will introduce the usage of regulated stablecoins, further enhancing the scope of digital assets within the financial ecosystem.
According to Julia Leung, the CEO of the Securities and Futures Commission, “Tokenized deposits can now power around-the-clock transactions, including corporate treasury management and secondary trading of tokenized funds on licensed platforms.” This initiative not only represents a leap forward in digital transactions but also sets a precedent for future developments in the integration of blockchain technologies within traditional banking frameworks.
The HKMA’s efforts indicate a growing acceptance and implementation of digital currencies and blockchain technology in Hong Kong's financial landscape, positioning it as a leader in innovation and a hub for fintech advancements.
