Gold ETFs: Latest Trends, Returns, and Investment Insights
Explore the thriving gold ETF market, including recent performance data and expert projections for future trends.
Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are seeing a surge in popularity, particularly in October, where net investments reached approximately ₹3,300 crore. This influx has brought the total assets under management (AUM) for gold ETFs to an impressive ₹1.91 lakh crore, a notable increase from ₹1.58 lakh crore in April.
Current Market Dynamics
Despite a lack of significant price movement in recent months, gold has experienced nearly a 12% decline over the past six months. However, this has not deterred investor interest in gold ETFs, which offer access to domestic gold prices without the necessity of physical ownership. Gold ETFs are open-ended mutual funds listed on stock exchanges that aim to reflect the price of physical gold, with each unit usually representing one gram of 99.5% pure gold.
Performance Insights of Gold ETFs
According to recent data from Value Research, the category of gold funds has shown strong returns across various timeframes up until October 26. Year-to-date returns have been recorded at 6.94%, while one-year, three-year, and five-year returns stand at 18.64%, 31.90%, and 23.15%, respectively. Among the notable performers, the Nippon India Gold ETF BeES achieved a one-year return of 12.58%, closely followed by Invesco Gold ETF at 12.50% and ICICI Gold ETF at 12.39%.
Since the Diwali festivities on October 20, gold ETFs collectively delivered an average return of 9.22%, with a total of 22 gold ETFs available on the market during this period.
Future Outlook for Gold
The World Gold Council's latest quarterly report suggests that the festive and wedding seasons are likely to bolster demand for gold. Additionally, central banks are continuously increasing their gold reserves—currently at historically high levels—which could support prices in the coming year. However, the price outlook remains sensitive to shifts in the global economic landscape.
Pankaj Mathpal, the Founder and CEO of Optima Money, shared his insights, stating, "Although the outlook for gold remains optimistic due to strong investment demand and anticipated declines in supply, rising interest rates, bond yields, and a stronger US dollar may introduce volatility in gold prices." He cautioned investors against attempting to time the market or making substantial lump-sum purchases at this juncture.
Mathpal recommends that investors consider accumulating gold gradually through ETFs, taking into account their existing portfolio allocation, exposure to gold, and long-term financial goals. He emphasized, "Gold should primarily function as a portfolio diversifier and a hedge against uncertainties, rather than a vehicle for short-term speculation."
Why Choose Gold ETFs Over Physical Gold?
Gold ETFs provide a compelling alternative to purchasing physical gold in the form of jewelry or coins. Buying physical gold often incurs making charges that can increase the total cost. In contrast, gold ETFs, which are held in demat form, eliminate such charges and negate the need for secure storage.
Another advantage of gold ETFs is that investors are free from costs related to bank locker fees or worries about the physical security of their assets. Gold ETFs can be traded like stocks on the NSE and BSE during market hours, allowing for real-time buying and selling at market prices.
Moreover, investors can enter the gold market with smaller amounts, avoiding the need for large upfront investments. ETF units can be purchased via a demat and trading account, and many schemes offer the option to invest systematically.
Before increasing their investment in gold ETFs, it is essential for investors to assess their current gold exposure, overall portfolio, and specific financial objectives.
