EIC Scaling Club Sees €4 Billion Boost in Funding for Deep Tech Ventures
The EIC Scaling Club is reporting over €4 billion raised, with notable achievements in quantum and AI funding.
The EIC Scaling Club, a European initiative focused on accelerating deep tech startups, has made significant strides, securing over €4 billion in funding since its inception. Companies benefiting from this initiative have experienced a remarkable 2.3 times increase in funding rates compared to similar businesses prior to joining.
Key Funding Highlights
Among the standout performers, Multiverse Computing from Spain has successfully raised €500 million, marking it as the most substantial funding round reported. Meanwhile, the domain of Next-Gen Computing has attracted €1.32 billion, contributing to a burgeoning ecosystem of innovation aimed at reinforcing Europe’s technological landscape.
Sector-Wise Financial Breakdown
The report illustrates a notable concentration of investments in sectors deemed vital for enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness and resilience. The New Space industry collectively garnered €1.34 billion, while Renewable Energies followed with approximately €589 million. Notably, these sectors alone account for almost 80% of the total capital raised.
Noteworthy Investment Rounds
A total of nine funding rounds exceeded €100 million, cumulatively representing more than half of the total funding acquired. Public co-investors, including the EIC, played a crucial role in facilitating these rounds. Prominent examples include:
- Multiverse Computing: €500 million
- PLD Space: €288 million
- Axelera AI: €234 million
This funding surge has resulted in participating companies achieving 128% of their initial pre-joining investment amounts, a stark contrast to the mere 56% rise observed among their non-participating peers.
Role of Public Investment
The importance of public funding mechanisms is evident, with approximately 80% of the total raised coming through rounds that involved the EIC or other public co-investors. This highlights not just the financial support available but also the strategic focus on nurturing innovation that can yield significant societal benefits.
Future Cohorts of the EIC Scaling Club
Launched in April 2024, the EIC Scaling Club plans to introduce its second cohort in October 2024. The emerging findings from the Europe’s Deep Tech Scale-ups: Building Momentum report study over 120 participating companies across 26 nations, showcasing the investment growth and the immense potential lying within Europe’s deep tech arena.
“Innovation only truly makes a difference when it reaches people in their everyday lives,” remarked Michiel Scheffer, President of the Board at The European Innovation Council. “Supporting deep tech startups is vital both for society and for bolstering Europe’s competitive stance.”
