BlackRock's Strategy Shift Impacts COIN and CRCL Stocks

BlackRock's recent downgrade of US stocks and upgrade of Treasuries may lead to volatility for COIN and CRCL.

Overview of BlackRock's Recent Moves

BlackRock, one of the largest asset management firms globally, has recently adjusted its stance on the US stock market. The firm downgraded US equities from overweight to neutral and upgraded US short-term Treasuries to overweight. This significant change comes as Treasury yields continue to rise, influencing various asset classes including cryptocurrencies and stocks.

BlackRock's Downgrade Explained

The decision to upgrade short-term Treasuries comes amid a noteworthy increase in the yield on 10-year Treasuries, which has surpassed the 5% mark. This upgrade marks a departure from BlackRock's previous underweight position held since October 2020 when yields were around 0.9%. By reallocating resources towards Treasuries, BlackRock aims to navigate the current market dynamics prudently.

According to BlackRock, this adjustment is crucial for effective risk management. The firm emphasizes the necessity for adaptability in today’s unpredictable economic landscape. Consequently, this recalibrated approach could bring selling pressure to specific stocks, particularly in the crypto sector.

Impact on COIN and CRCL Stocks

In light of these changes, the stocks of cryptocurrency firms such as Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) and Circle (NYSE: CRCL) have attracted considerable attention. Coinbase's stock, COIN, has experienced a downturn of 23% year-to-date, while Circle's CRCL has managed a slight increase of 0.9%. However, both stocks are trailing behind the S&P 500, which has recorded a gain of 13.8% over the same period.

Investors are particularly looking for signs of volatility as BlackRock's downgrade could signal shifts in market sentiment toward these stocks.

Technical Analysis of COIN Stock

Analyzing the technical performance of COIN reveals a downtrend that has persisted since late September. On October 13, however, the stock price managed to close above a crucial resistance level at the upper trendline. If COIN can maintain this trendline as support and overcome the $184 barrier, it may pave the way for a bullish push towards $200.

Additionally, Morgan Stanley has raised its price target for COIN to $258, anticipating strong Q3 earnings. Despite this positive outlook, the ADX line shows a downward trend, indicating potential weakness. If COIN falls back into the descending channel and drops below the trendline, the price could reportedly slide to $163.

Outlook for CRCL Stock

On the other hand, CRCL stock appears to be stabilizing after bouncing off a key support level at $79. Currently trading around $84 in pre-market hours, the stock is showing signs of recovery as the downtrend loses momentum. A successful close above the resistance level at $86 could indicate a bullish trend towards $97.

Though the CMF line remains negative, its recent pattern of higher lows suggests that selling pressure is easing. The effort to break above resistance levels may gain traction if the positive trend continues, but a drop below $79 could invalidate the bullish outlook, risking a decline towards the August low of $71.
