Bitcoin's Response to Major Hacks: A Look at Market Trends

Exploring Bitcoin's historical behavior following significant exchange hacks, including the recent Binance incident.

The Aftermath of Exchange Hacks

In the world of cryptocurrency, hacks and security breaches can lead to chaotic trading conditions. Recently, after the reported hack of Binance, a few notable figures, including Elon Musk, emphasized the risks involved in trading cryptocurrencies. Musk warned that "every day is zeroday," a term used in hacking culture to describe the exploitation of vulnerabilities before they can be addressed.

Market Reactions to Notable Hacks

Historically, Bitcoin's price has experienced significant fluctuations following major exchange hacks. Here’s a comparative look at Bitcoin's closing prices after three major incidents:

EventDateBTC CloseAfter 30 DaysAfter 90 DaysAfter 1 YearMt. GoxFebruary 24, 2014$489+16%+18.5%-51.5%Bitfinex HackAugust 2, 2016$567+1.2%+28.5%+389.5%FTX CollapseNovember 8, 2022$18,579-7.3%+22.7%+91.9%

After the Mt. Gox hack, Bitcoin rebounded by 16% in the initial month and 18.5% within three months. However, over the year, it fell drastically by 51.5%. Interestingly, the aftermath of the Bitfinex hack painted a different picture, as Bitcoin grew by 389.5% over the year following a more subdued initial response of just 1.2%. Similarly, following the FTX collapse, Bitcoin first dipped by 7.3% but eventually soared by 91.9% over the next year.

Current Trends Ahead of Binance Hack Impact

Before the Binance hack, Bitcoin was already experiencing a downturn, having dropped 8.52% in the preceding month and 11.37% since the beginning of 2026. As of now, it's trading 29.16% lower than its position a year ago, and the initial news of the hack further compounded its downward slide.

The price chart reflects a similar pattern to 2014, especially after hitting a peak in October 2025. Although Bitcoin has faced decline recently, it did register a 22.22% increase over the past three months, with a low recorded at $58,566 on June 30, 2026.

Despite this volatility, Bitcoin's current trading remains above its crucial 200-day moving average of $73,120, yet it continues to linger below the 50-day average of $81,901—a sign hinting at ongoing short-term struggles.

Binance's Financial Standing Comparison

The recent Binance hack is unlikely to dictate Bitcoin's long-term trajectory, thanks to market cycles that have historically influenced pricing after such events. For long-term holders, the immediate aftermath of a hack might often be seen as market noise, with a year-end analysis revealing a trend more contingent on overall market conditions.

Importantly, Binance's situation contrasts with that of previous hacks. While competitors like Mt. Gox encountered bankruptcy and Bitfinex opted for a user-led loss distribution, Binance remains active and reassures users about the security of their funds. Michael Saylor, co-founder of Strategy, noted on October 30, 2026, that the platform has pledged its balance sheet to ensure customer compensation, suggesting a renewed faith among users.

That said, some analysts express concern regarding Binance’s SAFU fund, designed to cover losses for users, questioning its ability to manage all potential claims fully. Should Binance manage to reimburse all its users while keeping the 19 affected wallets inactive, the implications of this hack might dissipate quicker than the Mt. Gox incident. Conversely, if the stolen assets begin circulating back to exchanges, Bitcoin may face renewed selling pressure, particularly while trading at 38.44% below its record high.
