Beware of Diwali QR-Code Scams: PhonePe Issues Important Alert

  • 2 min read

With heightened digital transactions during Diwali, PhonePe warns users about potential QR-code scams and offers essential safety tips.

As Diwali approaches and shopping activity increases, PhonePe is alerting users about the rising threat of QR-code scams. These scams especially target shoppers during the festive season when digital transactions soar.

Understanding the Tactics Used by Scammers

The methods employed by fraudsters are often deceitful yet straightforward. In one approach, scammers distribute QR-code images through messaging apps like WhatsApp. They lure recipients with promises of cash rewards or special bonuses for scanning the code and entering their UPI PIN.

Another common tactic involves tampering with legitimate merchant QR codes. By placing a fake sticker over official codes, scammers redirect your payments to their fraudulent accounts, effectively stealing your funds.

Important Safety Guidelines for Users

PhonePe emphasizes that users should be cautious before proceeding with any transactions. A crucial point to remember is that you never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. This PIN should only be used when you authorize a payment.

Here are several key safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always verify the recipient's name and payment amount before confirming transactions, especially when scanning QR codes at physical locations.
  • Stay away from suspicious links, unsolicited payment requests, and time-sensitive offers that induce panic.
  • Confirm the legitimacy of merchants and use the PhonePe app to report any fraudulent communications.

How PhonePe Helps Protect Users

PhonePe has implemented a robust Protect framework aimed at identifying potentially risky transactions. This framework includes contextual warnings to guide users before they make a payment.

In addition, PhonePe employs various security measures such as:

  • Know Your Customer (KYC) checks
  • Biometric verification
  • Document authentication
  • Two-factor authentication

Steps to Take if You Fall Victim to a Scam

If you suspect that you have been scammed, it is essential to act quickly. Report the suspicious transaction through the Help section of the PhonePe app and get in touch with customer support immediately.

Additionally, any incidents of financial cyber fraud should be reported to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.

For reporting dubious messages and calls, users can utilize the Chakshu feature available on the Sanchar Saathi portal.

Lastly, never disclose your UPI PIN, passwords, or one-time passwords to others who claim they can offer cashback, refunds, or festive rewards.
