Boehringer Ingelheim's Chairman highlights the region's ascent in life science advancements at a conference in Seoul.

Asia-Pacific's Growing Impact

During the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business held in Seoul, Shashank Deshpande, Executive Chairman of Boehringer Ingelheim, underscored the significant role that Asia-Pacific plays in the global life sciences landscape.

Strengthening Presence in the Region

Boehringer Ingelheim, renowned for its integrated research and development (R&D) capabilities, has established a solid foundation in Japan and is expanding its partnerships across China and beyond. The company currently oversees over 200 clinical trials across the Asia-Pacific region, collaborating with approximately 160 academic institutions.

As part of its dedication to life sciences, the company is celebrating 50 years of operations in Korea. Deshpande reiterated Boehringer's commitment to enhancing research and development within the country, stating, "Predictable and supportive policy frameworks are essential for attracting investment in new human and animal health solutions." He further remarked, "With escalating international competition for talent and investments, Asia-Pacific is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of life science innovation globally."

Collaborative Efforts in Healthcare

Boehringer Ingelheim’s partnerships encompass the entire innovation lifecycle, from initial research to patient access. In 2025, the firm conducted various clinical studies, involving more than 160 academic collaborators throughout several nations, including Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, and Korea. Their initiatives in managing chronic kidney disease and heart failure reached more than 72,000 individuals, with local governments actively scaling these programs.

In the realm of animal health, the company's "Stop Rabies" initiative has successfully distributed over 65 million vaccine doses across five Southeast Asian nations since its launch in 2022.

Innovation Integration Across Borders

With around 80 projects in its human pharmaceutical pipeline, Boehringer Ingelheim is leveraging approximately 50% of these through external collaborations. The company’s journey in Asia-Pacific began with the establishment of its Japanese subsidiary in 1961, where it stands out as one of the few foreign entities with both R&D and manufacturing operations.

In 2025, Boehringer invested EUR 300 million in its Yamagata facility to bolster its status as an export hub for the Asia-Oceania region. Currently, there are around 65 clinical studies underway with more than 1,900 participants, involving a workforce of 2,280 who contribute to the global research and manufacturing network.

A Bright Future in Korea

Korea's strengths in AI-enhanced drug discovery and health data are showcased at APK 2026, where Boehringer Ingelheim is at the forefront. The company is enhancing its partnerships within Korea’s life science ecosystem, conducting approximately 50 clinical studies while marking a half-century of operations in the country. Notably, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Boehringer and Yuhan during APK 2026, solidifying their collaborative efforts for clinical and scientific advancements as well as improving patient access.
