Treasuries Experience Major Gains Amid Global Uncertainty

U.S. Treasuries saw significant rallies as traders sought safe investments amid market turmoil and rising tensions.

Treasuries enjoyed a substantial rally on October 22, marking their strongest performance in over a year. Worries over falling AI-related stocks, political instability in France, and escalating conflicts in the Middle East fueled a rush to U.S. government bonds, favored by cautious investors.

Yields Plummet

The recent gains resulted in yields dropping by as much as 20 basis points across various maturities, the steepest decline since August 2025. Notably, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell below the critical 5% mark for the first time in a month.

This surge was further amplified by significant activity in Treasury futures, as many traders sought to adjust their positions, reversing previous bearish trends.

Investor Concerns Grow

Uncertainty surrounding the viability of artificial intelligence investments—previously seen as a key driver of U.S. economic growth—has led to a marked decline in technology shares, pushing investors to seek refuge in bonds. This shift has sparked broader concerns about the overall economic outlook, causing traders to temper their expectations regarding imminent interest rate hikes.

As David Robin, an interest rate strategist at TJM Institutional Services LLC, noted, “There’s a change in the weather. Flight-to-quality is one thing, growth risk is something entirely different.”

Rising Oil Prices and Economic Ramifications

The rally in Treasuries occurred despite Brent crude oil futures surpassing $112 a barrel, following violent incidents in Saudi Arabia that have heightened fears of supply disruptions. These rising energy prices, once a source of bond losses, are now being viewed as a potential headwind for economic growth. Consequently, traders have adjusted their rate hike predictions, fully anticipating only a quarter-point increase in January instead of December.

In addition to these factors, issues in France, where financial asset yields have risen sharply amid increasing investor concerns over a mounting debt burden, have bolstered demand for U.S. Treasuries. French yields are now significantly higher than German equivalents, marking a historic divergence.

Market Sentiment Shifts

Robert Waldner, chief investment officer and co-head of Invesco Fixed Income, described the current state of the market, stating they had anticipated signs of potential shifts after recent spikes in Treasury yields. He observed that Treasury yields have reached extreme levels and noted the effect of AI-related concerns in hinting that “we have seen the peak for the time being.”

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, often used as a barometer for AI sentiment, dropped by as much as 7.3%, reaching its lowest since late July. Eugene Leow, senior rates strategist at DBS Bank, remarked on this increased market anxiety, indicating that with U.S. yields remaining relatively high, many investors are inclined to mitigate risk by seeking the safety of Treasuries.

Auction Outcomes

A recent auction of five-year Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS) totaled $26 billion, revealing a yield of 2.367%—a figure slightly above the bids' deadline yield. This constitutes the highest yield for this tenor since October 2023.

As of October 21, a Bloomberg index tracking Treasury returns reflected a rise of approximately 1.2% for the month, recovering somewhat from its most considerable drop in nearly two years observed in September.

Despite a gradual rise in oil prices, as Kenneth Crompton, head of rates strategy at National Australia Bank noted, U.S. Treasuries continue to attract safe haven investments.
