Starknet Introduces Shadow Accounts for Enhanced DeFi Privacy
Starknet rolls out Shadow Accounts, allowing users to safeguard their DeFi activities while retaining essential functionalities.
Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution, is making waves in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space with the launch of its new feature, Shadow Accounts. This innovative tool is designed to enhance user privacy by allowing transactions through separate addresses, distinct from users' primary wallets.
What's New with Shadow Accounts?
Announced by StarkWare on October 13, Shadow Accounts enable users to engage with various DeFi services without exposing their main wallet addresses. The company emphasizes the need for privacy, stating that 'Every app should have a private mode. So we shipped it.' However, users should be aware that not all transaction details or account balances will be hidden.
How Do Shadow Accounts Work?
Each Shadow Account provides a unique address associated with a DeFi application, allowing users to maintain an active presence across multiple transactions. Unlike temporary addresses, these accounts are permanent, enabling users to manage ongoing trading or lending activities without revealing their main wallet details.
As users engage with DeFi applications for the first time, a Shadow Account is automatically created. This account stays linked to the chosen application and signifies that the user is returning based on the separate address utilized. For instance, an individual might use one Shadow Account for trading activities and another for lending, successfully decoupling these operations from the main wallet.
Privacy Limitations and Transparency
It’s worth noting that Shadow Accounts do not render DeFi transactions completely invisible. Starknet's technical materials clarify that while the relationship between a Shadow Account and its originating wallet is obscured, the public nature of the blockchain means that any funds held within a Shadow Account (such as ERC-20 tokens) are still visible to anyone using blockchain explorers. If someone links a Shadow Account to an individual, they can still track its transactions and balances.
The primary function of Shadow Accounts is to mask the connection to the wallet that funded them. Consequently, while transaction details and amounts could still provide some insights to blockchain observers, the overall visibility of users' activities is reduced.
Integration with STRK20 Privacy Framework
The operational mechanism of Shadow Accounts is facilitated by the STRK20 privacy framework, which Starknet launched back in June. Users can deposit compatible tokens into a collective pool, where their holdings are protected from public scrutiny.
When users activate private mode within a supported application, their funds are moved from the shielded balance to the Shadow Account. This account can then interact comprehensively with the application while preserving a complete transaction history independent of the main wallet. Post-activity, users can easily transfer funds back to their shielded balance, with the wallet managing all necessary cryptographic proofs without revealing any identifying information about the original wallet.
Developer Support and Future Applications
StarkWare is making it easy for developers to integrate Shadow Accounts into their current services. By utilizing the Starknet Wallet API alongside the function known as shadow_account_invoke, developers can enable transaction submissions through these separate accounts without gaining access to users’ private keys. However, each user must possess a compatible wallet, and the respective DeFi application must support this new feature.
The introduction of Shadow Accounts has already been demonstrated with Vesu’s vSTRK vault, and StarkWare has hinted at future applications in areas like lending, staking, liquidity provision, and derivatives. Nonetheless, the extent of availability across various platforms remains unconfirmed.
This privacy-launch follows StarkWare's robust STRK20 framework and a previous demonstration of private identity verification solutions. While details regarding the adoption rate of Shadow Accounts, volume of trade, or assets managed through this feature remain undisclosed, the enhancements represent a significant milestone in achieving privacy-focused solutions in the DeFi ecosystem.
