A recent Chainalysis report reveals that 10% of remittances to the Philippines are being settled using stablecoins, providing efficiency and cost savings for families.

Stablecoins Facilitate 10% of Filipino Remittances, Report Says

As cryptocurrency continues to evolve, a significant trend is emerging among Filipino expatriates: the use of stablecoins for remittances. This trend is highlighted in the 2026 Geography of Crypto Report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, which indicates that stablecoins now account for nearly 10% of all inbound remittances to the Philippines.

Revolutionizing Remittances

For many Filipinos working abroad, sending money back home has traditionally been burdened with high fees, slow processing times, and poor exchange rates. However, stablecoins, which are digital currencies linked to traditional fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar, are changing the landscape of remittances.

According to Nichel Gaba, CEO of the Philippine Digital Asset Exchange (PDAX), major remittance companies have begun to adapt to this change. He emphasized, "All the major remittance companies have initiatives to do stablecoin settlement into the Philippines." This indicates that the industry is recognizing the efficiencies that stablecoins provide.

Enhancing Financial Efficiency

One of the most significant advantages of stablecoins is their ability to settle transactions quickly and at a lower cost compared to traditional banking systems. For Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who often send smaller amounts of money multiple times, these savings translate to more financial support for their loved ones back home.

In fact, the Chainalysis report highlights an interesting trend in Southeast Asia, where countries like the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam lead in the practical application of cryptocurrency. These nations accounted for 14.4% of all small-value peer-to-peer transactions globally, despite only representing 2.5% of the entire cryptocurrency market.

Key Statistics from the Report

  • Over 80% of domestic transactions were under $1,000.
  • The average P2P transfer size was $618, compared to $1,210 worldwide.
  • Cross-border stablecoin transactions were 3.2 times higher than domestic use.

The Cross-Border vs. Domestic Dilemma

Interestingly, while the Philippines has robust local payment systems like GCash and Maya, these platforms excel at domestic transactions but don't adequately meet the needs for international money transfers. This gap is where stablecoins shine.

By integrating international remittance providers with local cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets, stablecoins serve as a vital settlement layer, eliminating the need for traditional banks that often slow down cross-border transactions.

A Shift Towards Core Financial Infrastructure

As noted by Chainalysis, 2026 is expected to witness a pivotal shift in the role of digital assets. We are moving away from the speculative nature of cryptocurrencies to recognize them as integral components of financial systems. For many Filipino families around the world, the transition to utilizing stablecoins for remittances is offering tangible benefits, enhancing the way they manage financial support across borders.

The increasing use of stablecoins and digital assets marks a new chapter in how families support each other financially, bridging the gap between economies.
