Sri Lanka Police Alert: Beware of Fake Dating App Scams

The Sri Lanka Police are warning the public about financial scams linked to fraudulent dating apps.

Understanding the Threat of Dating App Scams

The Sri Lanka Police have issued a serious warning regarding the rising number of scams related to dating applications and social media platforms. They urge individuals to exercise caution when interacting with unfamiliar persons online.

In recent months, numerous incidents have emerged where fraudsters utilize dating apps to build relationships, either friendly or romantic, with unsuspecting victims. Through enticing messages, they manipulate individuals over short or extended periods to cultivate trust before executing their deceptive plans.

Scammers' Techniques

These scammers often reach out via popular social media and messaging platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram. They may offer alluring online sexual services or propose personal connections, leading victims to download dubious mobile applications.

While these apps may masquerade as dating platforms, many are, in fact, malicious APK files intended to infiltrate the victim's device. Once installed, they can compromise a user's phone security and facilitate unauthorized access to online banking details.

The Risks of Malicious Applications

Once the fraudulent application is on a victim's mobile device, scammers can discreetly collect usernames and passwords tied to financial accounts. If a victim attempts online transactions while the malicious software is present, the scammer can easily withdraw funds without the victim’s knowledge.

The police have remarked on the rapidly evolving tactics employed by these fraudsters. Some scammers, for instance, exploit the allure of love and companionship to deceive individuals into sharing sensitive financial information.

Staying Safe Online

To protect themselves, the public is advised not to install applications from unfamiliar sources or to share banking details, passwords, or one-time passcodes (OTPs) with strangers. Additionally, the police strongly recommend against sharing personal photographs or videos with unknown contacts.

Emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making when forming online relationships, authorities encourage individuals to remain vigilant. By staying alert during online interactions, users can better protect their personal safety and financial well-being.
