SBI Digital Markets and Ember Join Forces to Tokenize RWAs

SBI Digital Markets and Ember Protocol announce a partnership to explore the tokenization of real-world assets onchain, utilizing Arbitrum as their primary platform.

SBI Digital Markets and Ember Protocol have entered into a strategic partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). Their collaboration aims to investigate the structuring, tokenization, and distribution of institutional real-world assets (RWAs) utilizing blockchain technology.

Partnership Overview

SBI Digital Markets is a branch of SBI Digital Asset Holdings, part of the Japan-based SBI Group, while Ember Protocol offers a platform for launching and managing institutional investment products and tokenized assets. Their services encompass various stages, including product structuring, issuance, and ongoing operational support, connecting investors across different blockchains.

Roles and Responsibilities

The partnership capitalizes on the strengths of both companies. SBI Digital Markets specializes in asset origination, structuring, regulatory compliance for financial services, and institutional product distribution. Ember focuses on providing the necessary infrastructure for tokenization, vault deployment, and ensuring liquidity.

This collaboration is unique because it addresses the entire product lifecycle rather than focusing on isolated stages. This comprehensive approach includes asset structuring, product issuance, investor subscription and redemption processes, and the pathways for products to enter secondary markets and achieve widespread distribution.

Focus on the Arbitrum Network

The initial phase of their project will be concentrated on the Arbitrum blockchain. This choice is strategic, as the products launched on Arbitrum will integrate into existing markets that already have substantial capital and active participants. Steven Goldfeder, Co-Founder and CEO of Offchain, emphasized that institutions prefer to issue tokenized products in environments where liquidity and participation are already established. He highlighted that Arbitrum not only offers robust tokenization infrastructure but also benefits from an existing financial ecosystem, allowing products to engage with market activity from the outset.

Arbitrum serves as a platform that provides the necessary infrastructure for applications, tokenization, and specialized blockchain environments. It also connects businesses to a comprehensive financial ecosystem on Ethereum. This configuration allows enterprises to manage their own environments while benefiting from shared liquidity and a global settlement layer.

Insights from Leadership

CK Ong, Acting Chief Executive Officer of SBI Digital Markets, shared his perspective on the partnership, noting the transformative impact of tokenization on the structuring and distribution of investment products. He emphasized the need for a DeFi-native partner capable of facilitating the on-chain transition of RWAs, ensuring suitability, managing investor risk, and enabling effective distribution. Ong’s vision is to responsibly advance the next phase of digital capital markets.

Similarly, Ibra Barbery, Co-Founder of Ember Protocol, emphasized that the on-chain movement of institutional assets demands collaboration between financial services and digital asset infrastructures. He believes that the combination of SBI Digital Markets’ institutional expertise and Ember's on-chain capabilities can pave the way for innovative tokenized investment products.

As the agreement is structured as an MoU focused on exploring future opportunities, specific details regarding launch timelines, product offerings, or particular asset classes have not been announced at this stage.
