Samsung Wallet Welcomes USDC for Hassle-Free Transactions
Samsung Wallet now allows U.S. users to buy and manage USDC directly, streamlining crypto use.
Samsung has integrated stablecoins into its Wallet app, bringing a new feature that allows users to manage digital dollars easily. Starting Thursday, U.S. Galaxy users can now buy, hold, send, and receive USDC, a digital stablecoin that operates on the Solana blockchain.
Accessibility for Millions
This new capability is now available for approximately 82 million Galaxy devices in the U.S. Users can enjoy the convenience of cryptocurrency transactions without the need for additional apps or the complexities of private key management.
Lily Liu, the president of the Solana Foundation, commented on the significance of this milestone, saying, "For a decade, stablecoins have proved the technology works. What they lacked was a way to reach the mainstream." This partnership between Samsung and Solana is set to change that dynamic.
How It Works
The integration of USDC into Samsung Wallet is supported by Bastion, a licensed custodian and infrastructure provider for stablecoins, along with Coinbase, which acts as the sub-custodian for USDC using its Coinbase Prime Vault. Importantly, Samsung has clarified that users will be working with a crypto wallet rather than a traditional bank account.
Samsung Wallet users can seamlessly transfer USDC to other users within the app in the U.S. or to compatible wallets, without incurring any transfer fees from Samsung. However, fees may apply when sending to external platforms. Additionally, users can send USDC to qualifying bank accounts across more than 60 countries, with the potential to receive local currency, although fees will vary depending on the destination.
Additional Fees and Promotional Offers
Users looking to top up their wallets with a credit card through Samsung Pay will encounter a 4% fee, and withdrawing funds to a bank account or debit card also incurs charges. As an incentive, new users who make an initial deposit of at least $50 can earn $25 in USDC.
To utilize this feature, users must have Android 13 or newer and must be U.S. residents aged 18 or older, with the exception of those living in New York.
The Future of Stablecoin Payments
Samsung has plans to explore broader usage of stablecoins, potentially enabling both online and in-store payments, subject to local regulatory guidelines. Woncheol Chai, who is at the helm of Samsung's digital wallet team, emphasized the potential of stablecoins to simplify global money transfers. "We want Galaxy users to take advantage of that without the complexities of traditional crypto tools," he stated. With the integration of Solana, Samsung aims to deliver a streamlined experience at a scale that many users can appreciate.
