Indonesian authorities have confiscated significant cash and evidence during a corruption probe in nickel mining operations.

Jakarta has recently become the focal point of a major investigation into corruption related to nickel mining operations in Southeast Sulawesi. Indonesian prosecutors from the Attorney General's Office (AGO) have made headlines with the seizure of Rp11.8 billion, equivalent to approximately $649,000, in cash from multiple locations across the city.

Details of the Seizure

The investigation, which spans a timeline from 2013 to 2025, has led AG's special crimes division to uncover a substantial amount of money during coordinated searches. On Thursday, they discovered Rp11.2 billion at one site and an additional Rp595 million at another.

According to Saiful Bahri, who leads the investigations at AGO, the cash was located in a company office, stashed away in several suitcases and bags. Alongside the cash, investigators also confiscated crucial documents regarding nickel mining operations and electronic devices which included mobile phones, laptops, computer units, and servers.

Ongoing Investigations

The AGO is currently pursuing an individual known only by the initials AK. He is believed to be the overseer of several nickel mining companies implicated in the investigation. Reports indicate that AK is currently outside the country, and the AGO is collaborating with immigration authorities to track him down.

Moreover, interrogations have revealed 38 witnesses who have connections to AK and the ongoing operations under scrutiny. The AGO's efforts are ongoing, as they continue to gather testimonies and additional evidence before transitioning the case to prosecutors for potential trial.

Allegations of Corruption

The primary focus of the investigation revolves around accusations that various companies bribed government officials to ease the processes related to mining administration, such as licensing, production, and sales.

In an effort to unravel the complexities of the case, investigators are also delving into bank account documents which might lead to the freezing of assets linked to those involved. Specific details regarding these accounts and the potential targets remain under wraps as the investigation progresses.

Locations of Interest

The searches conducted in Jakarta were strategically targeted at six locations suspected of being connected to AK. Among these were a residential property in South Jakarta and the offices of four distinct companies located within APL Tower in Central Park, Mid Plaza, and the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD).

Overall, the AGO's extensive operation, which included the collection of various essential documents and electronic evidence, serves to strengthen the integrity of the ongoing investigation into corruption within Indonesia's nickel mining sector.
