PowerToys Update: Enhance Your Mouse with New Features
The latest update to PowerToys introduces Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide, enhancing mouse functionality for Windows users.
Microsoft's PowerToys continues to evolve, adding new features to enhance user experience. The recent update, version 0.102, brings two exciting tools designed for better mouse control: Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide.
Streamlined Text Selection with Mouse Button Lock
Selecting a large amount of text can be difficult, especially when it extends across multiple sections. Typically, users have to press and hold the left mouse button throughout this process, which can be cumbersome. Fortunately, the Mouse Button Lock feature simplifies this task.
To utilize Mouse Button Lock, hold down your chosen mouse button for a second or two before releasing it. Now, as you move your mouse, the text will automatically be selected until you click the button again to finish your selection.
This feature improves upon Windows' ClickLock setting by offering enhanced customization options. Users have the ability to designate which mouse button to use for activation, adjust the hold duration in milliseconds, and set a specific travel distance in pixels for the selection. For instance, you may prefer using the right mouse button, setting a hold time of 1.5 seconds, and allowing a range of 100 pixels for the selection process.
To get started, position your cursor at the beginning of the text. Hold down the button you have assigned, and as you drag your mouse, watch the selected text highlight effortlessly. When you reach the endpoint, click the button again to complete the selection.
Eliminate Distractions with CursorHide
In many cases, the mouse cursor can obstruct your view while typing or navigating through applications. The new CursorHide feature addresses this by making the cursor invisible during typing or after a period of inactivity.
To activate CursorHide, navigate to the Mouse Utilities section in PowerToys and toggle the settings. You can choose to hide the cursor while typing, during inactivity, or both. Users can set the inactivity period anywhere from 1 to 60 seconds. For example, setting the delay to 5 seconds ensures the cursor is hidden shortly after your last action.
Once CursorHide is enabled, any time you start typing in an application, the mouse cursor will automatically disappear, helping to declutter your workspace. If you move the mouse, the cursor will reappear, allowing you to refocus your attention as needed.
