Lido, the liquid staking protocol behind the stETH token, has rolled out Curated Module v2 — an upgrade intended to boost validator efficiency and reshape how staking is managed on Ethereum's consensus layer. Lido says the change will be handled at the protocol level and requires no action from individual stakers.

The key technical change is support for Ethereum’s 0x02 withdrawal credentials. That support allows validators to increase their effective balance well beyond the standard 32 ETH, up to a proposed ceiling of 2,048 ETH per validator position in Lido’s design. By consolidating smaller validator slots into larger ones, Lido projects the protocol’s migration could reduce the total number of Ethereum validators from roughly 880,000 to about 628,000 — a decline of approximately one-third. Those figures are projections and the migration has not yet begun.

Lido says the upgrade affects the consensus layer — reducing the number of validators and validator messages the network must process — but does not change execution-layer activity that determines transaction fees and gas costs. The update also introduces new accountability and security measures for Lido node operators, including bonding requirements and penalty mechanisms.

Future stake distribution under the Curated Module v2 framework may give greater weight to operator performance, fee levels and contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem. Lido frames the release as a step toward a leaner, more sustainable staking infrastructure, balancing operational efficiency with added operator incentives and governance changes.
