Investors Turn to Private Market Infrastructure Opportunities

As companies stay private longer, investors are exploring new avenues, particularly in infrastructure.

Understanding the Shift Toward Private Market Investments

With many companies opting to remain private for extended periods, those who typically focus on publicly traded markets encounter a decreasing selection of investment options.

Private equity has historically been a primary route into private market investments, but access has often been limited. This environment typically favored institutional investors such as sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, and insurance companies, due to stringent regulatory frameworks and high investment minimums.

Opening Doors: Evergreen Funds for Eligible Investors

Recent developments are enhancing accessibility for eligible investors looking at private market infrastructure. Evergreen funds have emerged as flexible alternatives that allow interested parties to invest without the extensive locks commonly associated with traditional private equity funds. While liquidity in these markets is less compared to public equities, evergreen funds help bridge the gap.

Unlike standard closed-end private equity models, which may freeze capital for a decade or more, evergreen structures provide opportunities for investors to join and exit at specified intervals. This innovative approach is vital in broadening access to private infrastructure strategies.

For instance, Sueann Yeo, Head of Global Wealth Solutions, APAC at EQT, shares insights on their initiatives: "EQT aims to make private market infrastructure more accessible for eligible investors. In June 2026, we collaborated with Ironbark Investment Solutions to establish the Ironbark EQT Nexus Infrastructure Fund, an evergreen investment vehicle for qualified wholesale investors and institutions in Australia."

The Significance of Infrastructure in Investment Portfolios

Over the past two decades, EQT has positioned itself as a premier player in the global infrastructure investment landscape, managing an impressive $170 billion in assets, supported by a proficient team of 155 investment experts worldwide.

The infrastructure arm of EQT focuses on companies that deliver essential services, characterized by steady demand, predictable incomes, and strong business models. These attributes render infrastructure investments particularly suitable for long-term strategies that can adapt to inflation and economic fluctuations, thus augmenting broader investment portfolios.

Yeo remarks, "EQT adopts an active, private-equity-style investment approach to infrastructure, which sets us apart from the traditional passive methods of simply collecting returns from assets such as toll roads and regulated utilities. We target firms where we can add real value through growth and operational enhancements."

EQT's global infrastructure strategy spans various sectors, including digital, energy, environmental, transport, logistics, and social infrastructure. Their investments encompass both emerging companies scaling up and established leaders in the market.

Convergence of Digital and Energy Infrastructure

Digital and energy sectors have been fundamental themes for EQT Infrastructure, and the rise of AI is accelerating their integration. The demand for data centers necessitates substantial power, and renewable energy sources stand out as sustainable solutions to meet these needs. The combined growth of these sectors presents what EQT identifies as a significant opportunity for investment.

Yeo emphasizes the importance of infrastructure in society: "Infrastructure forms the backbone of resilient communities—delivering the essential services that people rely on daily. The intersection of energy and digital structures is becoming increasingly critical, especially with the rise of the AI economy, making this an exhilarating investment narrative."

Historically, the benefits of private market infrastructure have primarily been reserved for major institutions like pension funds and sovereign wealth entities. However, evergreen fund structures are now enabling a broader range of eligible investors to tap into private infrastructure strategies at a time when interest in this asset class is intensifying.
