Highlights from Kaigi on Rails 2026: Our Contributions and Experiences

Hello everyone! I’m takai from IVRy, and I’m excited to share our experience at the Kaigi on Rails 2026, which took place at Bellesalle Shibuya Garden on October 16 and 17, 2026.

A Major Gathering for Rails Enthusiasts

Kaigi on Rails is a renowned technical conference dedicated to web application development, specifically highlighting the Ruby on Rails framework. This year, our team had the opportunity to engage with the Ruby community and share valuable insights.

IVRy's Role as a Silver Sponsor

IVRy stepped in as a Silver sponsor for this year's event. Our work revolves around the IVRy conversational AI platform, which heavily relies on Ruby and Ruby on Rails as fundamental technologies. Being a part of the Ruby ecosystem has significantly benefited our development processes.

We feel a strong commitment to contribute back to the community, and our participation as a sponsor is one way to do just that. Although we did not set up a booth or distribute promotional items, our team was present with ten engineers, actively participating through presentations and a special side event.

Insightful Presentations from IVRy Engineers

During the conference, two of our engineers took the stage to share their knowledge and experiences.

API Schema Definition with Protobuf

On the first day, Sorah Fukumori, our Principal Software Engineer, delivered a talk on utilizing Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) for API schema definitions within Rails applications. He addressed the common issues associated with manually writing OpenAPI definitions and shared a compelling case study that illustrated how Protobuf could be integrated into a Rails application.

Sorah elaborated on achieving increased type safety while retaining Rails' flexibility, covering seamless integration with ActiveRecord and ActionController and highlighting the automatic generation of OpenAPI schemas.

Building a Recurring Job Infrastructure

On the second day, I presented on a topic very close to my heart: the design and implementation of a recurring job infrastructure. Drawing from my experiences creating such systems with three different architectures, I analyzed the vital design elements needed, regardless of the chosen technology.

Using IVRy’s implementation as a reference, I explained how we strive to alleviate the cognitive load on developers by allowing the platform to handle intricate tasks, such as job management and failure response.

An Evening of Music and Networking

One of the highlights of our event participation was co-hosting the RubyMusicMixin on Rails 2026 gathering alongside Pixiv. This vibrant event took place on the evening of the first conference day at Studio Freedom in Dogenzaka, Shibuya.

RubyMusicMixin provided a fantastic opportunity for attendees to unwind and socialize, enhanced by music from various DJs. The event attracted over 60 participants, fostering a friendly atmosphere where Ruby enthusiasts could connect outside the formal conference setting. Such informal interactions play a crucial role in strengthening community ties.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on Kaigi on Rails 2026, IVRy not only showcased our commitment to the Ruby community through sponsorship and presentations, but also strengthened our connections by bringing people together at a lively side event.

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to sharing the knowledge we derive from our daily development experiences and actively contributing to the Ruby community.

A big thank you to the organizers of Kaigi on Rails 2026, all the presenters, and everyone who engaged with us during the conference and our side event. We look forward to seeing you all at future gatherings!
