Franklin Templeton Launches Bitcoin Dividend ETFs on Nasdaq
Franklin Templeton has registered two ETFs that convert stock dividends into Bitcoin, set to debut on Nasdaq.
Introduction to New Investment Options
On Thursday, Franklin Templeton announced the registration of two innovative Bitcoin dividend reinvestment ETFs for trading on Nasdaq. This significant move brings the asset management giant one step closer to launching these long-awaited investment products.
Details of the ETFs
The two funds, known as the Franklin U.S. Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF and the Franklin U.S. Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, were officially registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by filing a Form 8-A. The registration is expected to take effect on October 27. However, the firm has yet to confirm an official trading date for these ETFs.
Franklin Templeton manages an impressive $1.8 trillion in assets, and the recent filings represent a culmination of efforts that started back in June. Despite earlier delays, the firm is now ready to move forward with these unique offerings.
Understanding How the ETFs Operate
These ETFs utilize a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) strategy. For instance, the U.S. Equity fund will track the VettaFi U.S. Large-Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index, which comprises the 500 largest U.S. companies based on market capitalization. The starting allocation will be comprised of 95% stocks and 5% Bitcoin.
The innovative aspect of these funds is that any regular or special dividends distributed by the underlying stocks will be reinvested into Bitcoin at market prices the day following the ex-dividend date. This process is designed to gradually increase the Bitcoin allocation in the fund over time.
At quarterly rebalances, if Bitcoin reaches a weight exceeding 5%, it will be adjusted back to 4.5%. Should it surpass 20% in between rebalances, the allocation will also revert to the 4.5% threshold. Additionally, the fund may gain Bitcoin exposure through various exchange-traded products (ETPs), futures, and options, even those sponsored by related entities of the fund's investment manager.
Market Context and Sentiment
The announcement came on the same day that investors withdrew approximately $635.49 million from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, indicating a potential lack of confidence in current market conditions, particularly as Bitcoin's value has fluctuated—falling over 1% within a 24-hour period. Retail sentiment observed on platforms like Stocktwits has recently remained in a 'bearish' zone, with overall discussion levels relatively low.
Franklin Templeton's Bitcoin History
This is not the debut of Franklin Templeton in the Bitcoin ETF space. The company previously launched the Franklin Bitcoin ETF (EZBC), which had an asset valuation of around $467 million as of the last recorded data. These earlier efforts have laid the groundwork for the firm's latest advancements in offering Bitcoin exposure to investors.
With these new Bitcoin dividend ETFs, Franklin Templeton is set to provide investors with an opportunity to diversify their portfolios by pairing traditional equity dividends with Bitcoin—a notable blend of conventional finance and cryptocurrencies.
