The latest data shows Ethereum ETFs faced significant outflows, surpassing Bitcoin ETFs by nearly $92 million over a recent week.

Ethereum ETFs Experience Larger Withdrawals Than Bitcoin ETFs

Significant Withdrawals in Ethereum ETFs

For the week ending October 16, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs reported a staggering $320.1 million in net outflows. This amount surpassed the $228.4 million in withdrawals recorded by Bitcoin ETFs, marking a notable shift in investor preference.

Performance Breakdown

Among the Ethereum ETFs, BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) was the primary contributor to these withdrawals, accounting for nearly $299 million of the total outflow. During the five trading days, Ethereum funds experienced plateaus and declines, only making gains on Tuesday while suffering losses for the remainder of the week. In contrast, Bitcoin ETFs saw varying trends, experiencing small inflows on two separate days but losing significant capital overall.

On October 18, Bitcoin was priced around $81,238 while Ethereum was approximately $2,386, reflecting a broader weakness in the cryptocurrency market. The downturn for Ethereum ETFs continued a three-week pattern of withdrawals, with ETHA leading the way in losses.

Daily Flow Analysis

Examining the weekly performance reveals that Monday alone saw $85.4 million withdrawn from Ethereum ETFs. This trend continued with a notable $129.5 million withdrawn on Wednesday, marking the largest single-day outflow for the week. By the end of the week, Ethereum funds had only one day of positive net inflows.

Bitcoin ETF dynamics were distinctly different, with a withdrawal of $65.4 million on Monday, followed by a surprising $175.7 million influx on Tuesday. Nevertheless, this was followed by a harsh $261.4 million withdrawal mid-week, contributing to a complex trading environment.

Impact on Market Values

The increase in withdrawals for both types of ETFs corresponded with declining prices for their underlying cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin briefly dipped below $80,000, while Ethereum prices hovered near the $2,300 mark at times. This continued downward trend was exacerbated by the latest inflation data, which influenced investor sentiment and trading strategies.

Despite this week’s heavy outflows, both Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have maintained positive cumulative net flows over their histories, with Bitcoin ETFs attracting approximately $56.95 billion and Ethereum ETFs at around $12.97 billion, highlighting a complex but resilient market landscape.

As the cryptocurrency landscape continues to evolve, investors are closely monitoring ETF inflows and outflows to gauge market sentiment and potential future movements.
