Eight Altcoins Show Significant Gains, But Is Seasonality Near?
Several altcoins have posted impressive gains compared to Bitcoin, raising questions about market trends.
Tracking Altcoin Performance
The Altcoin Season Index helps investors gauge market dynamics by defining altcoin season as a period when 75% of the top 50 cryptocurrencies outperform Bitcoin over three months. As of October 10, 2026, this index registers at 51, indicating that we are not yet in an altcoin season. Notably, it has been over a year since the last altcoin season, with 39 days passing since Bitcoin's last notable surge.
CoinMarketCap's alternative index recorded a score of 61 on October 1, confirming that the market's activity does not meet the threshold of 75 necessary for an altcoin season declaration. These indexes are designed to extend their measurements over 90 days, helping to filter out sporadic fluctuations that could mislead investors.
Recent Trends Among Altcoins
Among eight notable altcoins, only NEAR Protocol and Cardano have shown resilience over the past week, with gains of 13% and 3% respectively. The rest have recorded declines, illustrating a shift in momentum.
- NEAR Protocol: 120.7% gain (18.9x Bitcoin's performance over 30 days, +13% last week)
- Sui: 47.5% gain (7.4x, -5.3% last week)
- Aave: 40.4% gain (6.3x, -4.9% last week)
- Avalanche: 37.3% gain (5.8x, -3.8% last week)
- Uniswap: 25.0% gain (3.9x, -18.9% last week)
- Litecoin: 21.9% gain (3.4x, -8.0% last week)
- Hedera: 21.7% gain, (-9.1% last week)
- Cardano: 20.3% gain (3.2x, +3.0% last week)
- Bitcoin: 6.4% gain as benchmark (declined -2.2% last week)
Uniswap suffered the most significant setback with a 19% drop, nearly erasing half of its previous 30-day growth. Other cryptocurrencies like Hedera and Litecoin have also shown declines, suggesting that the recent gains may not indicate a sustainable trend. Instead, this shift could be a fleeting bounce back for altcoins amidst a broader market dip.
Long-Term Performance Landscape
Looking closely at the long-term performance, it's essential to note that all eight altcoins are still trading significantly below their all-time highs. For example, Avalanche is down an alarming 93% from its peak, while both Cardano and Litecoin are down over 90% as well. In contrast, Bitcoin is down only 34% from its highest value.
Even with substantial short-term gains, these altcoins could still have a long way to go to recover. For instance, Cardano would need to increase approximately twelvefold to reach its previous record high, making a modest 20% gain seem minor in that context.
Are We Entering Altcoin Season?
Current data hints at the beginning of a potential altcoin season, but the overall evidence suggests we may be witnessing a temporary market bounce. With six of the eight altcoins showing a decline in the past week and the Altcoin Season Index lingering at 51, the momentum required for a confirmed altcoin season remains distant.
For altcoin investors, the index serves as a crucial metric to watch. A reading of 75 or greater would signify a shift into altcoin season, the first in nearly 380 days. However, if the index remains low and more coins experience declines, it might suggest that the recent surge was merely a brief rally rather than the start of an enduring altcoin season.
