Cardano's Stablecoin Supply Outpaces DeFi TVL by $11 Million
Cardano's stablecoin supply reaches $69.2 million, surpassing its DeFi TVL by more than $11 million.
Cardano has hit a significant milestone in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, with its stablecoin supply currently exceeding the total value locked (TVL) in its DeFi ecosystem by over $11 million.
As of the latest data from DeFiLlama, the stablecoin supply on the Cardano network is approximately $69.2 million. Although it peaked earlier in the month at over $72 million, the figure has since dipped below the $70 million mark.
Stablecoin Supply vs. TVL
Despite this dip, the supply of stablecoins on Cardano remains notably higher than the assets currently locked within its DeFi protocols, which stands at around $57.93 million—down from a high of more than $71 million earlier in the month. This results in a difference of approximately $11.27 million, leading to a stablecoin-to-TVL ratio of about 119.45%.
This ratio illustrates the abundance of stablecoin liquidity available on the Cardano network compared to the capital deployed in its DeFi applications. However, it is essential to note that not all of this available liquidity is necessarily earmarked for use in DeFi.
Implications for DeFi Growth
The considerable stablecoin supply raises an intriguing question about whether this liquidity will eventually flow into DeFi applications across the network, potentially boosting overall activity. A stablecoin-to-TVL ratio above 100% can indicate an opportunity for various applications to capture more capital, especially if holders perceive attractive options for deploying their stablecoins into lending markets, liquidity pools, and other DeFi services.
That said, this ratio alone doesn't inform how much of that capital is inactive or whether holders intend to integrate it into the DeFi space.
Leading Assets in Cardano's Stablecoin Supply
The USDCx stablecoin has taken the lead in Cardano’s overall stablecoin supply, accounting for $43.52 million, or about 62.9% of the total stablecoin capitalization. This stablecoin was launched on Cardano’s mainnet in February.
Following USDCx, USDM represents $13.24 million, constituting 19.13%, while the newly introduced RealFi stablecoin (USDrf) is valued at $5.4 million, or 7.80% of the stablecoin supply. The prominence of these assets highlights the necessity for attracting stablecoin holders into Cardano’s DeFi applications. However, an increase in stablecoin supply does not automatically translate to heightened deposits or trading volume within protocols.
Encouraging Capital Deployment in DeFi
For Cardano to effectively convert its robust stablecoin supply into active participation in DeFi, its applications must offer compelling opportunities for users to invest their assets. High lending rates, enhanced liquidity pools, and effective decentralized trading options could entice more stablecoin holders to engage.
It’s important to consider that not all stablecoins are held by users ready to deploy them. Issuers may mint stablecoins before distributing them, holding them in reserves or company-controlled wallets. As a result, a portion of the reported stablecoin supply may not be in circulation among active users.
The pivotal challenge for Cardano will be fostering additional stablecoin deposits and showcasing consistent growth in capital utilization within its DeFi framework.
DEX Activity Remains Low
Despite the stablecoin-to-TVL ratio hinting at potential liquidity, Cardano’s decentralized exchange (DEX) activity has remained lackluster. Recent reports from DeFiLlama indicate that the network managed to achieve just $850,242 in DEX trading volume over the last 24 hours. Furthermore, the seven-day DEX volume declined by 28.05% to $6.08 million.
These statistics emphasize that Cardano has yet to successfully turn its stablecoin liquidity into vibrant decentralized trading activity. The data reveals an ongoing gap between the available stablecoin liquidity and the actual trading volume on its decentralized exchanges, signaling room for growth and engagement moving forward.
