Bitcoin vs. Zcash: What You Need to Know After Zcash's Drop
Discover the latest on Bitcoin and Zcash as we explore their recent performances and upcoming developments.
Recent Trends in Bitcoin ETF Flows
In the world of cryptocurrency investments, Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have become significant indicators of market sentiment. As of October 22, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net assets totaling $104.7 billion, having attracted a cumulative influx of $57.3 billion.
However, a notable shift occurred in investment flows recently. Following two days of steady inflows—amounting to $526.6 million on October 19 and $528.4 million on October 21—investors pulled out a staggering $635.5 million on October 22. This was the most substantial single-day outflow since September 23. Despite this fluctuation, the overall figures indicate that long-term investors continue to maintain their positions.
Zcash's Upcoming NU7 Upgrade
Zcash is gearing up for an important upgrade, known as NU7, with a mainnet launch scheduled for November 5. This enhancement aims to improve transaction efficiency by reducing the average time between blocks from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds. Additionally, it introduces a unique structure where 60% of transaction fees will be reserved until February 2031.
On October 4, the NU7 upgrade was implemented on Zcash's test network, where coins do not hold market value. In a recent coinholder vote, an overwhelming 98.9% supported retaining the current halving schedule, although the ultimate activation decision for NU7 is still pending.
So far, there have been no announcements from exchanges, wallets, or investment funds regarding the NU7 upgrade. Notably, the reserve fee system will only delay the distribution of mining rewards, as ZEC's total supply is firmly capped at 21 million coins.
Evaluating Bitcoin Against Zcash for Investors
When it comes to choosing between Bitcoin and Zcash, many investors may find Bitcoin to be a more attractive option, largely due to its relatively stable risk-reward profile. Although the outlook for both cryptocurrencies does not suggest a return to prior highs before the end of 2026, Bitcoin boasts a robust 24-hour trading volume of $24.8 billion, dwarfing Zcash’s $806 million.
This discrepancy in trading volume makes Bitcoin better suited to absorb large sell orders without significant price fluctuations, which is evident in their recent price movements: on October 22, Bitcoin reported a decline of 3.3%, while Zcash fell by 7.6%.
Investors interested in Zcash need to be aware of the potential volatility associated with its performance, including a notable 23.9% drop over the month, despite an impressive annual growth rate of 400.6%. A critical target for Zcash will be the successful implementation of the NU7 upgrade on November 5, as well as a rebound above $1,498, which was its price on September 23. In contrast, Bitcoin will aim to exceed the $84,378 mark, alongside cumulative ETF inflows rising past $58 billion.
