Bitcoin ETFs End Week on Positive Note, Despite Late Losses

Despite experiencing significant outflows, Bitcoin ETFs closed the week with some gains, ending a two-week decline.

Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) ended the week virtually in the green, although the gains were modest. The journey was rocky, especially towards the end, as these funds faced substantial withdrawals.

Financial Outflows Challenge Funds

On Friday, the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded outflows of $137.9 million, marking their second day of financial drains. Over the course of just two days, the outflows accumulated to a staggering total of $773.5 million, impacting an earlier inflow period that saw $1.07 billion enter from Monday to Wednesday.

Nonetheless, the overall performance for the week resulted in an approximate $301 million gain, finally breaking a two-week string of losses.

Monthly Performance Mixed for Bitcoin and Others

While October is traditionally viewed as a favorable period for Bitcoin investors, the numbers for this month tell a different story. The ETFs briefly entered positive territory earlier in the week; however, they were significantly dented by a substantial outflow of $635.6 million on Thursday—the largest exit recorded in October. Currently, funds are looking at a decline of about $314 million for the month.

As for cumulative figures, net inflows have reached $57.6 billion, contributing to total net assets of $100.2 billion.

In the Ethereum sector, ETFs managed a minor inflow of $4.4 million on Friday. However, they suffered an overall loss of approximately $221 million for the week and are down about $1.18 billion for October. Solana ETFs experienced no net flows on Friday following Thursday's $8.9 million reduction, with a decline totaling around $68 million this month.

Understanding Spot Crypto ETFs

Spot crypto ETFs are designed to hold assets such as Bitcoin or Ethereum directly and trade on stock exchanges like regular stocks. This format allows investors to gain exposure through standard brokerage accounts. Since launching, Bitcoin funds have achieved net inflows of $57.6 billion starting in January 2024, while Ethereum funds amassed $12.7 billion since their debut in July. Solana funds were introduced late last year, and the daily flow reports from issuers have become essential indicators of investor sentiment.

Market Trends and Predictions

As the weekend approached, prices for major cryptocurrencies began to decline. Bitcoin dropped by 1.1% over 24 hours, settling around $80,490, reflecting a weekly decline of 1.2%. Ethereum saw a downturn of 2.6%, landing at approximately $2,344, and Solana fell 2.8% to about $101. Overall, the total cryptocurrency market cap decreased by 1.2%, totaling $2.79 trillion.

This bearish scenario seems to have been stirred by a midweek selloff across global markets, influenced by rising oil prices and a slump in artificial intelligence stocks.

In predictions from the Myriad market, a prediction platform created by Dastan, traders have turned more pessimistic regarding Bitcoin's performance for the remaining of October. They now assess a 43% probability that Bitcoin will decrease to $77,500 before the month wraps up, a marked rise from the previous day's 32%. The likelihood of Bitcoin declining to $75,000 is estimated at 18%, while the chances of it exceeding $87,500 have dropped to 10% from 17%.

Conversely, Solana bulls hold a slight advantage over bears, with a probability of 51.6% for hitting $160 before testing the downside of $40, down from a previous 54.9%. Ethereum remains stable with a 61.3% chance of reaching $3,000 before dropping to $1,500.

The week started optimistically after J.P. Morgan Asset Management forecasted a 10% annual return for Bitcoin over the next decade. However, Bitcoin has since settled into a cautious “wait-and-see” phase among analysts.
