AI Technology Linked to Recent Bank Hacking in South Korea
President Lee Jae Myung highlights the role of AI in bank hacks and calls for improved cybersecurity.
In a pressing announcement on October 6, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung addressed the alarming trend of cyberattacks affecting the banking sector, suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) tools might have played a role in these incidents. He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures to keep pace with advancements in technology.
Concerns Over Cybersecurity in Banking
During a recent Cabinet meeting, President Lee expressed his worries regarding public safety and the risks associated with these sophisticated attacks. He stated, “In some hacking incidents, signs have emerged of AI being used, causing considerable public concern and anxiety.” The president called on relevant authorities to swiftly establish the facts and focus on minimizing the damage caused by these breaches.
Investigation Underway
The police have initiated a thorough investigation into a string of hacking attacks that have compromised the personal information of bank customers. According to Yonhap news agency, several leading banks, including Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank, reported cyberattacks, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue.
Additionally, on October 2, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) disclosed that other institutions like Hana Bank and Woori Bank also fell victim to these breaches. However, specific details about the AI tools employed and the extent of the damage remain undisclosed.
Emergency Response by Financial Authorities
In response to these attacks, FSC chairman Lee Eog-weon convened an emergency meeting on October 4 with financial industry leaders and regulators. He urged the banking sector to adopt a heightened state of alert and prepare to tackle this escalating cybersecurity threat.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) revealed that it, in collaboration with the Financial Security Institute, has shared information on 28 unique IP addresses believed to be associated with the recent hacking attempts. This measure aims to enhance the security posture of financial institutions against future attacks.
Global Context of AI in Cyberattacks
This incident in South Korea is part of a broader trend globally where AI technology is being implicated in cyberthreats. In September, an incident in Australia was reported where a government health data portal was breached by an AI agent, marking a significant event in the crossover between AI technology and cybersecurity breaches.
Moreover, AI research firms have noted attempts by AI agents to infiltrate Canadian government websites, although Canada stated that their systems remained uncompromised. These occurrences highlight the growing concerns of AI's role in the evolving landscape of cybercrime.
