Meta Platforms will end support for Horizon Worlds on Quest headsets on June 15, the company said, shifting the platform to a mobile-only experience. After that date, Quest users will no longer be able to build, publish, update, or access Horizon Worlds via VR headsets.
Horizon Worlds debuted in late 2021 as a VR-first multiplayer metaverse where users created and shared virtual spaces, games and avatar-driven interactions. Meta began testing a mobile version in 2025, and Samantha Ryan, vice president of content at Reality Labs, has said the company is “shifting the focus of Worlds to be almost exclusively mobile.”
That mobile pivot contrasts with competitors such as Fortnite and Roblox, which operate across PC, console and mobile. Fortnite has not launched an official VR version, while Roblox released a VR app in July 2023, although not all Roblox content supports VR.
The decision is part of a wider pullback in Meta’s metaverse strategy. Reality Labs reported a record $6 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 2025, bringing cumulative losses since 2020 to nearly $80 billion. In January, Meta cut roughly 1,000 Reality Labs positions and shuttered some VR game and content studios. Reality Labs CTO Andrew Bosworth has said the division will prioritize mobile experiences over fully immersive headset worlds.
Meta’s shift comes amid broader financial and staffing pressures. Meta shares rose about 3% after a Reuters report said the company was considering sweeping layoffs that could affect roughly 20% or more of its workforce to help fund investments in AI infrastructure and augmented-reality wearables; Meta called that report “speculative.” Many other tech companies have also trimmed staff to refocus on AI investments.
The wider blockchain-based metaverse has faded as well: tokens tied to major projects—Axie Infinity (AXS), The Sandbox (SAND) and Decentraland (MANA)—have fallen roughly 98%–99% from their November 2021 highs, according to CoinGecko data.
