Aave Labs is retiring the Avara umbrella brand as it narrows its focus on decentralized finance and simplifies its product lineup. CEO and founder Stani Kulechov said on X that Avara — which included projects such as the Family crypto wallet and formerly the Lens social protocol — is no longer needed as the company concentrates on bringing Aave to mainstream users.
The Apple iOS Family wallet will be wound down after the team concluded that onboarding millions of users requires targeted, purpose-built experiences (for example, savings features) rather than a general-purpose, open-ended wallet. Aave previously handed off stewardship of Lens to Mask Network and reduced its involvement there to an advisory role so it could refocus resources on core DeFi work.
Avara’s blog post explains that all current and future offerings — including the Aave App, Aave Pro, and Aave Kit — will operate under Aave Labs to streamline branding. Accounts associated with Family wallets will remain as core infrastructure for Aave Labs products, but the Avara/Family iOS app will be phased out over the coming year.
Practical timeline and access: no new users will be allowed to sign up for the Family app after April 1; existing users can continue to use it until April 1, 2027. Users will retain full access to their funds through Aave’s website during and after the phase-out.
Aave remains the largest DeFi protocol by total value locked, with roughly $30 billion, ahead of staking protocol Lido at about $21.7 billion, according to DefiLlama. The AAVE token showed little movement over the last day, down about 0.7% in 24 hours to $127.40, per CoinGecko.
