Newly uncovered call logs suggest Argentine President Javier Milei spoke with one of the entrepreneurs behind the Libra token multiple times on the night he promoted the cryptocurrency, raising doubts about Milei’s assertion that he had no connection to the project.
Prosecutors investigating the token’s collapse obtained the logs, which The New York Times reviewed. The records reportedly show seven phone calls between Milei and the unnamed entrepreneur before and after his Libra promotion post on X. The contents of those calls remain unknown.
The Libra token surged after Milei’s February 2025 post in which he promoted it as a way to boost Argentina’s economy by funding small businesses and startups. The token later lost more than 96% of its value from its peak, costing investors around $251 million. Milei deleted his posts, prompting accusations of a possible rug pull.
Milei has denied wrongdoing, saying he only highlighted a private venture and was not involved in the project. “A few hours ago, I posted a tweet, like so many infinite other times, supporting an alleged private venture with which I obviously have no connection whatsoever,” he said on X. He added he was unaware of project details and removed the post after learning more.
Argentina’s federal prosecutors launched an investigation after the collapse and have named Milei a person of interest; the case is ongoing. Argentine lawyers filed fraud charges against him and there have been calls for impeachment. Under Argentine law, fraud can carry a prison sentence ranging from one month to six years.
Argentina’s Anti‑Corruption Office cleared Milei last June of violating public ethics rules, concluding the post was personal rather than an act in his capacity as president.
A recent judicial update said investigators found a draft document on crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli’s phone that suggested a possible $5 million agreement connected to Milei’s promotion of Libra. The note was reportedly written three days before Milei’s X post but did not specify who would receive the funds.
